New Development to Increase Access to Affordable Housing in Rockingham

Construction at the site of Access Housing’s 10th property development has commenced.

Access Housing Chief Executive Officer Garry Ellender joined Senator the Hon. Michaelia Cash; Minister for Lands, the Hon. Terry Redman MLA; City of Rockingham Mayor Barry Sammels and Landcorp Development Management staff yesterday at its site at the corner of Market and McNichol Streets, Rockingham for a ceremonial ‘turning of the sod’.

Located in the Rockingham City Centre, the development will deliver a modern three level complex that will feature a variety of housing options including 28 two-bedroom apartments and four three-bedroom townhouses plus three highly sought after commercial spaces.

Access Housing secured Lot 1 within the broader Landcorp project site to construct a mixed use development that included affordable multi-unit housing. The Australian Government provided funding to Landcorp under the Liveable Cities program to redevelop the broader site, make upgrades to Market Street and enable affordable housing outcomes. Landcorp granted a portion of the Federal Government funding to Access Housing to assist in providing 32 affordable housing dwellings.

Mr Ellender praised Landcorp, the City of Rockingham and the Western Australian Planning Commission for working together to secure the funding from the Federal Government’s Liveable Cities program.

“This exciting project, the second Access Housing project under construction in the City of Rockingham, will contribute to the increased supply of affordable rental housing for the local community and will provide numerous affordable purchase opportunities,” Mr Ellender said.

Access Housing will retain 14 of the residential properties under the National Rental Affordability Scheme for affordable rental purposes. The remaining properties will be available for sale to NRAS investors and owner/occupiers seeking affordable housing.

Access Housing anticipates project completion in mid-2016.
