Empowering tenants with Dress for Success

30 Aug 2018

Access Housing and Dress for Success are striving to empower women living in Community Housing to take positive steps in their journeys towards employment, education and training.

Dress for Success is an international not-for-profit organisation that works with women to assist them in achieving economic independence. They offer a series of workshops covering career planning, networking, communication skills and confidence building. They also provide professional attire along with sessions about interview preparation.

As part of our Creating Choices Program, Access Housing has been referring tenants to Dress for Success and has seen positive outcomes for those who have participated. One tenant has completed the full suite of workshops after having Dress for Success suggested to her by our Creating Choices Officer Alex Kepes.

“It was the best course I have ever done, it was excellent. It has really built my confidence and Alex has been there to support me the whole way through,” she said.

Dress for Success hosted a taster workshop with 10 Access Housing tenants last month. The workshop was guided by our tenants, who shared their experiences and barriers to employment, education and training. Dress for Success staff then delivered content tailored to their needs.

The session worked as a successful pilot for future Employability Skills workshops for women living in Access Housing homes.

“I learnt who I could go to for help. I feel more open minded and I learnt a lot about self-awareness, motivation and self-belief. I feel very inspired and motivated,” one tenant said.

The workshop also aimed to encourage tenants to remain engaged with the Dress for Success program to continue to build their aspiration and capacity for study, volunteering or employment.

Following the workshop there was a tour of Dress for Success’ boutique, where several tenants signed up for a suiting appointment. One tenant was suited on the spot with new professional attire to give her confidence for her first day of employment the following day.

Access Housing is excited to plan future workshops and build upon our partnership with Dress for Success to further assist our tenants to achieve their employment, education and training goals.
