Access Housing becomes registered SDA Provider

9 Nov 2020

Access Housing is excited to announce the company is now a registered National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) Specialist Disability Accommodation (SDA) Provider.

The NDIS exists to provide funding and support to Australians who have a disability. According to ndis.gov.au, the NDIS will provide more than $22 billion in funding a year to an estimated 500,000 Australians who have permanent and significant disability within the next five years. For many people, it will be the first time they receive the disability support they need.

Specialist Disability Accommodation is a home and living initiative for eligible NDIS participants who require specialist housing solutions, including to assist with the delivery of supports that cater for their extreme functional impairment and/or very high support needs. Specialist Disability Accommodation Providers receive ongoing annual funding to assist with providing these housing solutions. The funding is not for support services, but is instead for the homes in which support services are delivered.

Access Housing General Manager Property Assets Duane Moroney said the company, as part of the Housing Choices Australia Group of Companies, was committed to delivering new housing options for people living with permanent and significant disability.

“In parallel to Access Housing working towards NDIS SDA registration, the company engaged extensively with private, commercial, institutional and NFP stakeholders to enhance our awareness and understanding of opportunities and needs in the SDA space. Having merged with Housing Choices Australia, we were also able to learn from HCA’s experience within the SDA space in the eastern states,” Mr Moroney said.

“Now that we have received registration, we are determined to be a driving force in the maturing SDA market within WA. Similarly, we are determined to provide homes and services that support and empower people with permanent and significant disabilities and become a trusted provider of choice for residents, families, partners and investors.”

For a property to be enrolled as an SDA property, it must be registered with the NDIS, comply with SDA Design Standards and be classifiable under one of the four following categories:

Improved Liveability; incorporates a reasonable level of physical access and enhanced provision for people with sensory, intellectual or cognitive impairment

Fully Accessible; incorporates a high level of physical access provision for people with significant physical impairment

Robust; incorporates a high level of physical access provision and be very resilient, reducing the likelihood of reactive maintenance and reducing the risk to the participant and the community

High Physical Support; incorporates a high level of physical access provision for people with significant physical impairment and requiring very high levels of support
