Access Housing Chief Executive Officer Garry Ellender has been appointed to the Community Housing Industry Association (CHIA) board as the WA Region Director.
The Community Housing Industry Association is one of Australia’s peak industry bodies representing the community housing sector. On behalf of its member organisations, CHIA undertakes research, policy development and advocacy in relation to social and affordable housing issues. Its vision is to foster a world-class community housing industry in Australia and its purpose is to lead, represent and advocate for the Australian community housing industry at a national level.
Based on national and international evidence, CHIA’s core argument is that the much needed growth and development of the Australian affordable housing system can best be achieved if the community housing industry is empowered to play a significantly expanded role.
Mr Ellender said he was honoured to be appointed to the CHIA board and to be entrusted to head up CHIA in WA.
“The social and affordable housing industry is undergoing fundamental transformation. The federal government is pulling out substantial policy, legislative and funding levers, placing Community Housing Providers at the heart of their reforms. New South Wales, South Australia, Victoria and Tasmania are also embracing innovative approaches with the Community Housing sector, in partnership with private capital,” Mr Ellender said.
“CHIA WA is hoping to establish a productive engagement with the WA government to drive similar reforms here in the west. I believe the States’ and the CHP sector’s interests are closely aligned and, if we work collaboratively at a strategic level, we can drive positive housing service and housing supply outcomes to benefit clients in need and those who are struggling on limited incomes. The machinery of government changes in WA provides the opportunity to take a holistic approach to both services and asset and supply challenges, involving Treasury, Planning and Communities.”
Mr Ellender is also a Director of PowerHousing Australia, which is a national network of 30 leading growth community housing providers who develop and manage social and affordable housing. PowerHousing Australia is the Australian member of the International Housing Partnership, which brings together housing organisations across the UK, USA, Canada and Australia.
