Pet Bond Update

Tenants who have been given permission from their landlord to keep a dog or cat on their rented property will be asked to pay an additional amount of security bond known as a 'pet bond'.
 
A 'pet bond' is used to cover the cost of fumigating the property at the end of the tenancy. If fumigation is not required then the pet bond is refunded.

On the 1st June 2011, new legislation under the Residential Tenancy Act (RTA) increased the amount of pet bond charged from $100 to $260 to cover the increased cost of fumigation.

Who will be charged the increased amount?
  • New tenants who want to keep a pet
  • Leases signed post 1st June 2011
Who will not be charged?
  • Existing leases where a pet bond is aready paid
  • Leases signed prior to 1st June 2011 will be charged only the pre-increase amount
Access Housing Tenants wishing to have a pet must seek written permission from their Housing Coordinator.
