Affordable Home Ownership

In the last decade housing affordability has emerged as a challenging social and economic reality, with a rising affordability gap giving many moderate income earners in private rental little chance of accessing home ownership. These same people are ineligible for social housing with eligibility criteria targeted primarily towards those on Centrelink benefits and pensions.

Access Housing recognised this emergent need for low cost housing and entered the affordable rental market by accessing State and  Commonwealth Government affordable housing programs for people on moderate incomes who do not qualify for public rental housing, but cannot afford either option of private rental or home ownership.

Two of Access Housing's tenants, Terry and Mary, found themselves being pushed out of public housing due to their combined income falling just over the threshold to qualify for public housing. They also found they could not afford the private rental market, or home ownership.

After discovering their position on the Department of Housing "over income limit" list, Mary and Terry were very happy to be contacted by Access Housing and were more than satisfied with the service they received. Access Housing was able to provide Mary and Terry with a new house they can call home, situated close to work, transport, shops and parks, describing the location as ideal, "initially, we were upset about being displaced after all the time and money spent setting the old place up as a home. Now we are overjoyed at the brand new house, location, and being able to plan our new garden. We can’t wait."
As part of the solution to increase social and affordable housing, Access Housing will include dwellings to sell as affordable homes in most of its property developments. For information on eligibility for affordable rentals or home ownership, please click on this link to see the application.
